Susan Rahman
Chartered Accountant & Founder

Why do you love your job?
Money is so utterly personal. Meaning it’s a very trusting, intimate and powerfully game changing relationship we build with our clients over time.

What do you love about your clients?
I love all my clients. I am so lucky to work with them. They are genuine, motivated to achieve, have energy and are enthusiastic about their work. They inspire me every day.

Where has your work taken you?
Over the years I’ve learned so much about the nuances of people in business and about so many varied industries from global banks, the luxury car market, specialised cakes, organic chickens & eggs even to soft-porn! I’ve worked across the entire professional and social spectrum.
This breadth of career experience has shown me that good accountants need to be open minded and resourceful as well as good at accounting!

What do you wish your younger self had known that you know now?
It’s ok to be assertive. I wish I had been more assertive when I was younger.
It’s ok to say “no”, people don’t mind. They’d rather you say ‘no’ than disappoint them after over-promising a ‘yes’.

What’s your life motto?
”Say what you think. Do what you say!”
Also, I really believe in positive thinking even when horrid things happen. “Think positive and (most often) your natural positive energy means positive things will happen.”

Top three lessons learned from career

1. People who do well are those who listen to bad news and bounce back from it - listening and trying to learn from constructive feedback always helps you move on with your business.
2. We must embrace change. Do not think change is going away - it just won’t!
3. Trust your instincts in business but always pay attention to the numbers!

Why do you love your job?
My father is also an accountant and I was able to get exposure to the world of accountancy through him. I discovered I actually love accounting because it is not just all about maths. Even though there is number crunching behind the accounting, to do my job well, you have to understand client organisations holistically; their business processes and the industry environments behind the transactions and trade they do. My work is fascinating.

What do you love about your clients?
I love working with clients who put their trust in us.
I love helping to solve their problems and watching them flourish as their businesses grow with our help.

What do you wish your younger self had known that you know now?
Don’t be afraid to try new things!

What’s your life motto?
”Attitude is a little thing - that makes a big difference!”

What are the top three lessons you've learned from your career so far?
1. Learn as much as possible from all the wise people you know.
2. Teamwork makes the dream work!
3. Never stop learning!
